A new source of energy?

There has been some interest in a device created by Italian businessman Andrea Rossi and collaborators that claims to produce large amounts of energy from the nuclear fusion of nickel and hydrogen by a benign process that allows it happen in a device you could fit in your basement and use to heat you house with almost no running expenses. It of course promises more than that, the almost complete elimination of the need to use fossil fuels for energy and thus possibly the most significant invention since fire was first harnessed 1.8million years ago. There is promised to be a full scale "reveal" later this month in the form of a 1MW generator. There have been smaller tests that have gone almost unnoticed since it is difficult to rule out it all being a massive hoax. Of course if it is a hoax, Mr Rossi has spent a large amount of money to ultimately look like an idiot. We remember recent history has had examples of people spending large amounts of money to end up looking like idiots, but in these cases, it was not their own money that they were spending. It was ours.
